Nazgul

Mark E. Rogers

1983, Acrylic, 18 inches x 24 inches

Framed. Acrylic on Canvas board.

An original painting by author/illustrator Mark E. Rogers, of Samurai Cat fame (among other things). This was purchased at the World SF Convention in 1984, where it would scare the bejeebus out of me when I woke up in my hotel room, and I saw those eyes staring at me.

This painting also kept me from selling a house for about 3 months. We had it hanging in the upstairs hallway, on the way to the bathroom. It had been there for years, and we got to the point where we didn't notice it. And neither did our realtor, apparently. So we were showing the house, and showing the house, and it wasn't selling. Then, one day, we happened to be home when a couple were touring the house. I noticed the woman coming down the stairs with a very odd expression on her face. She looked as if she had seen a ghost. Something had seriously scared her. I went upstairs to see if maybe a raccoon had invaded the bathroom again or something, and I couldn't find anything. Then I noticed our Nazgul, hanging there, glaring out at the world. Ah HA! A quick replacement with an innocuous photograph and the house was sold a few weeks later. It's still a mystery why the realtor never said, "Hey, Wendy, you know that creepy painting in your upstairs hallway? Switch it out, or you'll never sell this place!"

Not only does this unique painting represent one of the bad guys from Lord of the Rings, he's also really good at protecting your home - people will think that you're sacrificing small animals in the upstairs bathroom if you have this fellow gracing your walls!

I always wanted to make a brass plaque to display underneath him, saying "Our Founder."

Now, this Nazgul can hang on your walls. You know you want it.

The Iron Lords

by Tom Kidd

1983, Acrylic, 20 inches x 32 inches

Framed. Acrylic on Illustration board.

This is an original painting by Science Fiction illustrator Tom Kidd that I purchased at a Philcon (Philadelphia SF convention) in 1984 or perhaps 1985. It was the cover artwork for Andy Offut's novel The Iron Lords, which is still in print, apparently, but with a new cover. It was the first book of a sword and sorcery trilogy.

This painting has graced my walls for many years, but we are going with a less, um, violent decor these days (plus, I've run out of wall space). The Iron Lords have been languishing in a box for far too long, and I think it's time for another Fantasy and Science Fiction lover to cherish this painting.

This piece by Tom Kidd has not been made into a poster like many of his other artworks, and the original book is out of print for 20 years now, so this is truly a unique item of his.
